A. NHS Essential Services
Dispensing
If you bring your prescription into the Pharmacy we will dispense it for you quickly while you wait, or while you visit the supermarket, bank or other business in Main Street.
We carry a wide range of prescription medicines but if you need an item not in stock we will place an order before 1.30pm for delivery by 4.30pm that afternoon Monday to Friday. If it is after 1.30pm delivery will be 9.00am the following morning Monday to Saturday.
Prescription Collection: every lunchtime Monday to Friday and at 5.30 Fridays we visit White and Ponteland Medical Groups to collect prescriptions for dispensing that afternoon or the following morning. To use this service request the GP or receptionist to put your prescription for collection by Hopley Pharmacy.
Delivery: If you are housebound, on regular medication and have no carer able to collect them for you we may be able to deliver your medicines. The Pharmacist may arrange for our Pharmacy Student to deliver them for you on a Saturday morning. If your prescription is urgent, please ask to speak to the Pharmacist.
Monitored Dose Compliance Aid dispensing: If you are having difficulty in managing your medicines and are less able to take them properly, your GP can discuss this with the Pharmacist and make arrangements for dispensing in a weekly, sealed dose blister pack.
Surgical Appliances and Ostomy Products: we are able to supply catheters, urine bags, and ostomy products on prescription.
Rural Areas; Patients in rural areas are entitled to request that their prescriptions are dispensed by a Pharmacy of their choice.
Repeat Prescription Scheme
The NHS has introduced a batch repeat prescription scheme for those on stable, repeat regular medication. When the GP carries out your review of treatment he can say to take the medicine for the next 6 or even 12 months and sign an authorisation for the batch of prescriptions to be kept in the Pharmacy. We will check this with you and make arrangements for the medicine to be automatically dispensed and ready for you to collect when needed without need for further request until the next clinical review is due.

We provide a range of information aimed at both the public at large and at patients collecting their medicine. Leaflets are available to pick up from our display.

Support for self-care
It is easier, quicker and more convenient to care for minor ailments yourself than to see a GP. Through the Pharmacy you have access to treatment for a wide range of conditions including some medicines previously available only on prescription.
Disposal of un-wanted medicines
No unwanted medicnes should be kept at home or be thrown into domestic waste. Bring all out-of-date or discontined medicnes to the Pharmacy where we have facilities and access to a specialist contractor for safe disposal. This includes inhalers, ointments and ampoules for injection but we are unable to accept the following: Veterinary products, dialysis kits, solvents or garden chemicals.
B. NHS Advanced Service: Medicine Use Reviews
We provide this NHS service for patients to discuss their medicines with the Pharmacist in the private area using a computer based report format, a copy of which is sent to the GP. It is particularly useful for:
- Patients on multiple medicines, especially if quantities are “out-of-step”
- Long term treatment of major conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy or arthritis
- Recent discharge from hospital
- Major changes in treatment
- End of a batch of repeat prescriptions and before the next clinical review.
It is usually best to make an appointment, and to bring all your current medicines along in a carrier bag.
